Dutchy^s Pantastic Steel Orchestra Inc. is a not-for-profit organization with a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt status, founded by Derek de Vlugt in May of 2005.

Mission

Our mission is to provide a healthy positive extracurricular cultural experience for youth with a safe and fun after school environment.

  • To enhance the educational experience of young people by promoting qualities and skills through the learning and performance of steel drum music, which will assist them in their everyday scholastic settings

  • To serve as a cultural force in the South Miami, Florida community.

The children participate in high quality, community based, after-school mentor programs, they benefit by receiving personal attention from caring adults, exploring new interests, and making new friends. Programs in the Arts and Humanities offer a child the opportunity to expand their horizons and release their creativity. This often results in stronger academic achievement, positive self-image, a reduction in negative behavior, better school attendance and participation.

Our steel drum mentor program is open to all youth ages 7-18, regardless of cultural background. Practices are held 3 to 4 times a week for 2 to 4 hours a session depending on the amount of new material covered. Practices are also held on weekends and during summer breaks to keep our students fresh when school is not in session. This not only keeps them off the streets (and away from risky behavior), but also allows them to interact with peers from varied cultural backgrounds. Our students have learned proper techniques from the instructor/director, Derek de Vlugt and have performed in various community concerts and events.  All contributions, grants and income in excess of expenses will be dispensed in support of community needs, including musical scholarships and student aid.
